Many years ago as a young primary school student at North Kalgoorlie Primary School I had my first recollection of the Olympic Games – our teacher pinning a newspaper article to the board of Shane Gould winning 3 gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
I was enthralled – how did a school girl win 3 Gold,1 Silver and 1 Bronze Olympic medal in such a competitive sport at the age of 15? The memory has stayed with me for a long time and I still read articles that were published about Shane Gould’s feats over the years.
Years later, attending a Toastmasters evening in Margaret River, I got the chance to meet Shane Gould in person and hear her speak. Like many in the audience, we all wanted to know why Shane retired at the pinnacle of her career. Put simply, she said that she had achieved her goals in swimming and what was important in life was the journey you take.
This same message can be applied to financial planning. Whilst establishing financial goals is very important, it is virtually impossible for anyone to predict with certainty what your financial position will be in 10 to 30 years time due to so many unknown factors.
A financial adviser’s role is not confined to helping you establishing financial goals. A good financial adviser will:
- Keep you on track when things in your life do not go according to plan;
- Help you make sense of the complexity on your financial affairs;
- Act as a sounding board for important financial decisions you need to make;
- Develop a transition plan so that you can move from one phase of your life to the next without regrets;
- Prepare an estate plan so that you can leave a legacy for your family;
- Interpret the complexities of your tax advice so that it makes sense to you;
- Help you understand what is really important and helping you achieve it.
A Wealth Blueprint helps record and update your financial goals, but will also help to ensure the journey you take to get there is an enjoyable one for you.
